AmCham China invites you to attend a presentation on the Conference Board Global Economic Outlook Report for 2014. This event will feature Conference Board Chief Economist, Dr. Bart van Ark, who will discuss the associated outlook for China's economy, and provide projections for the world economy for 2014, 2014-2019, and 2020-2025.

The Conference Board Outlook evaluates countries from a variety of angles, including savings, investment, and employment. The projections are based on a growth accounting model that estimates trend growth as the contribution of labor use, capital and productivity to the growth of GDP. The trend growth rates that are obtained from this process are adjusted for possible deviations between actual and potential output. This approach distinguishes The Conference Board outlook from other projections as it helps identify underlying structural changes in the economy.
The 2014 results show China amidst a deep structural slowdown due to a confluence of factors, including: a high base effect (China's size), a decreasing working-age population, a shift to a services-oriented economy, diminishing productivity gains, and diminishing returns on investment. These trends combine to yield a base-case average annual growth rate for China over the next five years of 5.9%.

This special AmCham China session will present, discuss and debate the following topics:
• The Conference Board's Global Economic Outlook
• The associated outlook for China's economy – 2014, and through the medium and long-term
• Key economic assumptions of critical importance to MNC business in 2014 and beyond.

Dr Bart van Ark is executive vice president and chief economist of the Conference Board. Van Ark is an expert in international comparative studies of economic performance, productivity, and innovation. He currently holds the Chair in Economic Development, Technological Change and Growth at the University of Groningen, where he obtained both his Master's and Ph.D. degrees in economics.
